Thousands of Indians left their country during the 19th and until the beginning of the 20th century to work in the British, Dutch and French colonies. They were first sent as slaves and after the slavery abolishment, as indentured labours with a 5 years contract after which they could go back home.
Boarding in South India and then in Kolkata, they came to the French West Indies from 1854 with a contract without really knowing what to expect after their long journey. The majority of them couldn’t go back and had to settle and recreate a new life far from Mother India, without any contact with the family.
During the 20th century, many Indians left the country during after the Independence, after the withdrawal of Portugal and France from India, or to bring their expertise abroad.
As of now, there are 25 millions of people of Indian origin living outside India. They are called the “Global Indians” by the Indian Government.
Those from the 2nd generation like those from 5th or 6th generation face the same issue: they don’t know much about India and they are trying to find out their identity between several cultures.
Some will reject India, some will idealize it, however it’s only when they will immerse in it that they will know and accept India the way it is.
Meet Your Roots was created to help the Global Indians to reconnect with their origins.
Meet Your Roots – Meet Yourself : India is a country which can disturb us deeply but also can help us to find ourselves.Even if you don’t have Indian origins, we can guide you to make this 1st trip unforgettable with a great connection with India, Indians and…yourself.
